Support within our college community
Emory University is extremely welcoming of the LGBT community. One of the biggest organizations on campus, the office of LGBT life, has taken both minor and major measures to make sure Emory is a safe space. Their website is extremely accessible and easy to use. It maps out policies and parts of Emory that are crucial to the LGBT community.
Notable information:
Each dorm is required to have at least one single occupant bathroom to assure privacy of those who would like extra comfort.
Although one cannot change their full name on school documents, the school does allow students to be addressed by their first and middle initial. This will allow them to choose not to be called by a name that reveals a certain gender if they choose this option.
Students are not required to tell professors anything personal, including sexuality.
Third and fourth year students can choose any gender to room with based on their comfortability.
The Emory health insurance plan now covers mental health care and hormonal therapy. This is extremely useful for any who need to talk to a professional, or are looking to change genders, respectively. Additionally, sex reassignment surgeries are also covered under the plan.
