Current Georgia laws
Currently, Georgia does not legally recognize same-sex marriages. In 2012, a poll was distributed among Georgia residents to determine the general opinion of the public. Only 27% of Georgians said that they thought same sex marriage should be legal. 65% believe it should remain outlawed, and the remainder of people were unsure of their opinions. However, research supports that number of supporters is rising by 2% each year. If this trend continues, by 2020, a majority of Georgians will favor same-sex marriage.
While many states are becoming more liberal and legalizing same-sex marriages, Georgia has yet to jump on the bandwagon. There is a ban on gay marriage in their state constitution, which means it is a very important clause to many politicians.
Although these people are seemingly backward, there are counties in Georgia that have taken initiative for the better. Counties such as Clarke County, Decatur, Pine Lake, and the city of Atlanta all protect people from discrimination in the workplace. Otherwise, counties allow people to be turned away from jobs based on their sexual identity.
