rELIGIOUS FREEDOM LAW
In the past month, the Religious Freedom Law proposition has sparked major controversy in Georgia. The law, which has recently been withdrawn from consideration, was initially introduced by the state’s republican party.
The law was simple; It stated that businesses were allowed to discriminate against whomever they pleased based on their beliefs. They were allowed to deny both customers and prospective employees. This meant they could refuse to serve or hire gays, lesbians, transgenders, or any specific religion or ethnicity.
In such an advanced society, I don’t understand how this bill was even considered by more than one person. It is clearly an obstruction of the constitution, and is just morally wrong. It would hurt businesses in decreasing customer satisfaction, and losing business from those they turn away. It would also hurt businesses because they may turn away perfectly capable workers based on superficial judgments.
